In the lead up to Australia Day, Sydney residents are invited to board the 19th century tall ship replica, South Passage, as she prepares to set sail for an eight day voyage to Brisbane and experience the life of an early explorer.

Departing from Sydney on Sunday January 15th, 2012 South Passage will sail into Brisbane on Sunday January 22nd 2012. The voyage to Brisbane is open to anyone aged over 14 years and also qualifies as a component for the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

South Passage operates on a not-for-profit basis with the primary aim of running outdoor educational adventures for school students, however adventure seekers of all ages are welcome on this voyage.

Peter Grace, a South Passage board member and watch leader, says that sailing a working tall ship in the traditional way is an unforgettable experience.

"No two voyages are ever the same as the weather and winds are unknown. There may be the chance to drop anchor to explore an island or remote headland or good weather may make it preferable to sail on through the night," he said.

There will be opportunities to explore remote islands and discover the Australian coast like the early explorers would have done.

"This epic South Passage voyage only happens once a year so grab your chance to get aboard and feel the deck rise as the wind takes the sails," Peter said. The eight-day voyage will help subsidise the cost of school voyages.
