Forget the stereotype of jeeps and conventional pre-packaged wildlife safaris in Africa. Today, inventive companies such as African Safari Company are recommending camel-supported journeys in Kenya, adventures in southern Botswana where guests explore the bush by mountain bike or, for the soon to be betrothed, a Maasai blessing at a traditional tribal wedding ceremony in Tanzania. Walking safaris are also big today, including treks with the San Bushman in Botswana's Kalahari Desert and tracking rhino in South Africa and Namibia. Staff favorites include trekking for gorillas, chimpanzees, golden and colobus monkeys in Rwanda and Uganda where travelers may meet the Batwa People. African Safari Company specialty tours include those for amateur and professional photographers and special kid-friendly safaris for families. Safari adventures can focus on food and wine, animal migrations, trekking, art - the possibilities are virtually limitless according to Nesbitt. A new division launched in 2013, Small Ship Safaris features a similar exotic adventure experience - on water instead of land. Expedition ships for between 16 and 210 guests transport wildlife and nature enthusiasts to remote areas of Alaska, Amazon, Arctic, Baja Sea of Cortez, Galapagos and Patagonia. |
