Multicultural tropical Reunion Island is a French territory but it is far from France, tucked away in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar and south-west of Mauritius. A favourite annual celebration here is Diwali: Celebrate the light in Reunion Island. Diwali, the Tamil festival of light, is celebrated every year, from October to November, with events and shows open to everyone all over the island.
It is also the perfect place to unwind, with a host of therapies available at the island's spas. What's more with such a rich cultural mix, the gastronomy is varied and delicious. Palm hearts, called palmiste on Reunion Island, are one of the island's delicacies. They are quite rare and should be eaten fresh. You really should try them during your stay.
But, it is not all about eating and relaxing. Reunion Island is a unique playground for trail runners and trail enthusiasts and is full of running trails. With its vertiginous landscapes and exceptional routes, it is the ultimate experience and numerous races are held here every year, including one stage of the Ultra-Trail World Tour: "La Diagonale des Fous". This 167km race crosses the island from the South to the North, attracting hundreds of international athletes and spectators who come to take part in the event. |
