| A &K: Bespoke Travel |
|
The company, which began over forty years ago with a tour to Nairobi, has recently launched its 2011 Inspiring Journeys collection of sumptuous tours and cruises. In the 1970s Nairobi was exotic. These days A&K plans trips to Antarctica, the Galapagos islands, Peru, Egypt, Myanmar, Bhutan and more. The company now operates in 33 countries. Sound tempting? You need to be quick. ‘Next year, 2011, is pretty well booked out,’ says Raman, ‘although 2012 is looking good.’ At least that allows some planning time – and saving. This may be necessary as A&K tours are not budget affairs. These bespoke expeditions are at the top end of comfortable (read, luxurious) travel with accommodation at the finest addresses, fine food and wine, every amenity provided, each tiny matter attended to. Moving with the times, Ms Raman says that ‘glamping’ – highend camping – has become popular, and that A&K also believes in giving something back. Philanthropy is high on the agenda, with projects ranging from health, education and community services in some of the more needy countries where tours are offered, to conservation. Insider Access is another lure for travellers on A&K tours. These opportunities allow travellers to go to places not normally available to visitors such as the Russian space museum, an after hours visit to St Mark’s Basilica in Venice or the research station on the Great Barrier Reef’s Lizard Island. What began as a virtual experiment in travel decades ago, is now catching the imaginations of yet another generation. The world, quite obviously in A&K’s view, is a wondrous place to be enjoyed – in the most comfortable way possible. Geoffrey Kent, founder and Executive Chairman of Abercrombie and Kent, puts it simply. He calls travel ‘a lasting gift to yourself’. More information: Abercrombie & Kent. LATEST NEWS: (OCTOBER 2011)

‘We take you where other travellers cannot go,’ says Abercrombie & Kent Managing Director, Sujata Raman.
