Gourmet Pilgrim Italy

gourmet_pilgrim

First in a series of food and cookery books (Gourmet Pilgrim's Spain and Germany will follow in 2011) this beautiful book will soon have you drooling.

It covered everything you need to know about Italian food from the basics such as rice and pasta and polenta to intricate homemade recipes for pork and fennel sausages, spinach dumplings with sage butter, cassata and so much more. They are approachable too for home cooks, as these recipes have been gathered from home cooks and families throughout the country, and are as authentic as you could hope for.

Each region of Italy is described in detail and it is fascinating to see how food styles have evolved according to the history of each place. Sicily, for instance, reflects a series of invaders over the centuries which have left traces of Greek, Moorish and North African flavours on the menu; Lombardy channels Austria; while Venice leans towards Turkey and the east.

With almost 500 pages packed with information and recipes, this makes and ideal gift. One final inducement is the metal biscotti tin in which the book has been presented. Mum will love that!

Gourmet Pilgrim Italy, Hardback, 2010, rrp $69.95. Some text contributed by Sally Hammond.
