Great, Grand & Famous Champagnes

champagnes

It's a fact that just because a person has a great love of some activity, then a book on the subject may not always be exactly what they want. A fisherman, for example, may prefer being out of doors with a rod in his hand, rather than sitting inside reading about it.

However, in the case of this book, a champagne aficionado will almost certainly be hooked from the first page, for here is every fact, each tiny facet of interest about the world's favourite drink, beautifully presented by Fritz Gubler and author Jayne Powell as well as Dannielle Viera.

A large, gorgeously illustrated book, ideal for the coffee-table, this is the latest in the Great, Grand & Famous series of food and wine books. As with the others, no expense has been spared, and no angle on the subject ignored. This, surely, would have to be the most complete, exhaustive book about the wine which some call 'the nectar of heaven'.

Here then is the entire known history of champagne, its evolution and the background of some of the Champagne region's major Champagne Houses, their owners and winemakers.

Rightly so there is an entire chapter on 'the women behind the bubbles' too, and this is laced with anecdotes and insights. Another fascinating chapter traces champagne's impact on culture - especially in relation to art and theatre, film and dining in general.

No discourse like this would be complete, either, without the definitive knowledge of how to open, serve and match your champagne with food, providing the sort of background information every champagne-lover needs to fully appreciate the product. To cap off a truly fascinating volume, there is a page of trivia and fun facts, and glossaries of the sometimes confusing words and terms often used.

Of course no book, no matter how beautiful and erudite, can take the place of a flute of fine champagne - but it may well help you to appreciate and understand it even more.

And we'll all drink to that!

Great, Grand & Famous Champagnes ...behind the bubbles, presented by Fritz Gubler, published by Arbon Publishing, www.arbonpublishing.com 2011, rrp $79.99 (through the website for $71.99), hardcover, lavishly illustrated, ISBN: 978 0 9804667 8 2
