Best-ever Baking Recipes

"Who doesn't love someone who bakes a cake?" says cookbook author an food writer David Herbert. "There is no better feeling than sharing something you have made yourself, and seeing the pleasure it gives."

Herbert is a passionate cook, and perhaps never more enthusiastic than when he discusses baking. He is a firm believer in 'worrying less and baking more' and if you start to stir up his red velvet chocolate cake, for instance, it shouldn't be long before all your troubles float away on the delicious aroma as it bakes.

Herbert, now resident in London, grew up in a seaside town in Australia and has been "obsessed with food since childhood" he says. Many people are, of course, but he has managed to turn his obsession into a career. He has made tea for the Queen Mother and been a private chef for Paul Keating. It's also a delicious way of making friends.

Carrot cake, coconut macaroon cake, fruit loaves, muffins and brownies - there's over 200 recipes and something for everyone here, as well as tips and guidelines from a cook who you know would never be embarrassed if someone turned up unexpectedly for morning or afternoon tea.

As you won't be either if you use this book.

Best-ever Baking Recipes, by David Herbert, published by Lantern (Penguin) , March 2012, hardcover, rrp $49.95.
