Delicious days in Paris

Raised in a food-loving family in South Australia, Jane Paech was always going to dabble in food. What was not as expected was her love affair with a city on the opposite side of the world.

'One of the things I most love about Paris,' she says, 'is that it's a great walking city: compact, easy to navigate and breathtakingly beautiful.'

So with an attitude like this, who better to guide readers around this charismatic and mouth-watering city? Paech has developed fourteen leisurely guided walks that are more in the tradition of the French flaneur, a ramble that's sole aim is pleasure. With this in mind, the book is compact – ideal for the shopping bag you need to carry anyway – with sketch maps that make it easy to follow. The collection is eclectic. Macarons, ice cream, confit de canard, truffles. Just pick what your tastebuds are craving and set off.

So your walk might begin near the Eiffel Tower, progressing to breakfast at a streetside cafe, then a fromagerie, a street market, a museum or two and lunch somewhere along the way. The tale of each expedition is told with the authority of someone who lives in Paris and knows it well, and quite openly loves it.

What's more there are all the details you'll need of every place mentioned, so that you have a choice. Either head off on a self-guided tour following the book, or use it to meticulously plan and organise one of your own. Either way this book will become one of your best Parisian friends.
