Jumbo gin

A match made in Safari-heaven! That's what the makers at Indlovu River Lodge call meeting up with Les and Paula from Indlovu Gin.

When they presented the Lodge with a beautiful gin-tasting and chocolate-pairing, it was love at first sip. The decision was made to partner with them and present similar gin-tastings on game drives at the lodge.

Shortly afterwards, the story gets even quirkier. On safari in Kenya, Paula was sipping a G&T (as you do!) while watching a herd of elephants. The guide explained how particular elephants are in their browsing habits and yet digest very little of the plant material they consume.

She had this crazy idea …… would it be possible to make elephant dung gin?

Tracing provenance is very important because Indlovu gin has vintages, similar to wine. Depending on the locale and season during which the dung is collected, the botanicals will vary, and will infuse different flavours. The provenance of each bottle is therefore traced by a lot number.

That is how Indlovu gin was born – a gin made in Africa … designed by elephants.

Appropriately, ‘Indlovu’ is the word for elephant in several African languages and the makers use the foraging habits of the world’s largest land animals to select the botanicals used in the ginning process.

The brand is underpinned by a strong conservation message, and 15 percent of the profits from the sale of Indlovu gin will be donated to the Africa Foundation to support their work in wildlife conservation at Phinda Game Reserve.
