Pomelo - Grapefruit's big cousin

pummelospummeloflesh

On our recent trip to Vietnam we were delighted to again come across pomelo (Citrus maxima or Citrus grandis), the sumo-sized grapefruit common in south-east Asian countries where it is a native.

It's drier less acidic flesh is ideal when broken up and added to salads. That's if I can let it get that far. It is so easy just to keep snacking on it! The skin ranges from pale green to yellow when ripe. The pith is extremely thick, so don't expect to get the same proportion of flesh to size as you would with other citrus fruits. This is the largest of the citrus family, 15–25 cm in diameter and weighing 1–2 kg.
