Aussies are missing out on something amazing - Malaysian food!

Did you know?

  • Only one in two (54 per cent) Aussies claiming to have ever tried Malaysian food
  • Only five per cent of 18-64 year olds said they had eaten Malaysian food in the past week

Trying and buying Asian foods

  • Chinese is by far the most popular Asian cuisine - 92 per cent of Aussies said they had tried it and more than one in ten (14 per cent) claim to eat it once a week or more. Over half the population (58 per cent) indulge in Chinese at least once a month
  • 74 per cent of respondents claim to have tried Thai food, followed by 71 per cent for Indian - Around two in ten people (18 per cent) said they eat Thai food at least once a fortnight and the same number choose Indian
  • Younger Aussies are leading the charge when it comes to eating Thai food. 15 per cent of 18-24 year olds said they would eat Thai once a week or more compared to just five per cent of 50-64 year olds. Around a third of 50-64 year olds also claim to have never tried Thai cuisine
  • A similar trend was seen when it came to Chinese food - 19 per cent of those aged 18-34 said they had eaten it in the last week compared to just seven per cent of 50-64 year olds
  • Just one per cent of 50-64 year olds claim to eat Japanese food once a week or more and one in ten (13 percent) said they would have it once a month or more. In comparison, one in 10 (11 per cent) Aussies aged 18-24 claimed to eat Japanese once a week or more and 42 per cent enjoy it at least once a month
  • Surprisingly, 40 per cent of survey respondents said they have never tried Japanese food.           
  • Trial of Indonesian food is also low - only 50 per cent of Australians have tried it

Cuisine confusion:

Overall, Australians seem confused about Malaysian cuisine:-

  • only 15 per cent correctly identified Rendang Curry as Malaysian. Around a third (31 per cent) said it was Indian and a substantial portion (21 per cent) were unsure of its origins 
  • Only two in ten (23 per cent) knew that Laska was a Malaysian dish with 21 per cent believing it was from Thailand and 23 per cent admitting they were not sure as to where it came from.
  • When asked about Chicken Penang, only 28 per cent of respondents identified it as a Malaysian dish. 21 per cent said they were not sure where it was from and 19 per cent believed it was Chinese.
  • Despite the fact that Aussies appear to love Thai food, only one in two (52 per cent) could say that Chicken Green Curry was Thai and 17% believed it originally came from India.
  • Around a third (33 per cent) could not identify Beef Vindaloo as an Indian dish.
  • Nine out of ten people (89 per cent) correctly identified that sushi was originally from Japan
