National Cherry Festival

youngCherry blossom time is the best season to visit Japan, they say, but an even better season in Australia, is when the cherries are picked.

The growers in the NSW country town of Young, Australia's cherry capital, know this and so they celebrate every year at the height of their very short, but very sweet season.

The Young region produces 60 percent of Australia's cherries (around 600,000 cases) and they are available from mid-November until around Christmas.

cherriesThis year, 2010, is the 61st National Cherry Festival and there is much planned:

- National Cherry Festival Opening Celebrations on Friday, December 3rd

- Cherry Queen Ball, Friday December 3rd

- Cherry Pie Eating Championships, Saturday December 4th

- Cherry Festival Street Parade, Saturday December 4th

- Cherry Pip Spit Competition, Sunday December 5th

Just a four-hour drive south-west of Sydney, Young is the place to be on this weekend.

There's so much to see and do: orchard and vineyard tours, bush poets, highland dancing, dog trials, a car show, bike races, and even more. Get all the information
