(Pic: Wikimedia Commons) The honeybee has been described as the 'Angel of Agriculture' and for good reason, 65 percent of all the food that we eat is dependent on honeybee pollination. Fed Square is gifting Melbourne with some of these angels by opening up its rooftops to become a new home for a village of beehives. The 10 hives will be one of the biggest rooftop honey projects in Melbourne city. There are 40 rooftop bee villages already in operation in Melbourne CBD and inner-city suburbs, where the bees are busily working without disturbing residents below.
This is just one of the new and exciting foodie initiatives sprouting at Fed Square. As part of Fed Square's ongoing food and wine program, this Spring, Melbourne's central cultural hub and unofficial town square will also become home to Melbourne's largest edible CBD garden. Opening in October, Fed Square in conjuction with the Little Veggie Patch Co, will be converting the carpark rooftop into a 'Pop Up Patch.' An amazing 140 subscriber gardens will be available for Melbournians to grow their own veggies, right in the heart of the CBD. More details....
