Sarogini's Sri Lanka Food

When Perth grandmother Sarogini Kamalanathan started teaching people to cook her native Sri Lankan cuisine, she never dreamt her passion would turn into a succesful cookbook - let alone one that would be internationally recognised.

But in Beijing recently the 74-year-old took the stage in Daxing to collect a prestigious Gourmand World Cookbook prize for "Best in the World" for her book, Sarogini's Sri Lanka Food.

The Gourmand World Cookbook Awards were started by Edouard Cointreau, of the famous Cointreau drink family, and this year attracted entries from 187 countries. Gourmands, publishers, chefs and food fans gathered in the bustling Daxing district for the awards, held over two days.

"Never in my wildest dreams did I think I could get this," said Mrs Kamalanathan, who dedicated her book to her late parents in an emotional speech on the Daxing Theatre Stage.

Her 188-page book was produced and published by Mrs Kamalanathan and three friends - photographer Craig Kinder, designer Cally Browning and Perth journalist Norman Burns, under the Four Wallas Partnership.

The book, which has attracted rave reviews from buyers and food critics (West Australian food critic Rob Broadfield named it one of the top 10 cookbooks of the year), has also won a Silver Medal in the New York-based Independent Publisher Book Awards (IPPYs).

This has all been quite a thrill for Mrs Kamalanathan, who still teaches the art of Sri Lankan cooking from her modest Melville home in Perth's southern suburbs.

The book, which retails for $44.95, is being sold at selected outlets in Australia, Sri Lanka, Switzerland and the United Kingdom or here....
