Recipes from the Heart

Every now and again, there comes a book that is so much more than the sum of its parts. This book is like that.

A collaboration of ten top chefs, sharing their best recipes and magnificent photography is not a new concept. Even the insertion of thought-provoking quotes is hardly groundbreaking.

But where this book is truly thrilling is that it grew out of an idea conceived by Singaporean chef Jimmy Chok in 2009 as an idea of combining the best work of nine of his fellow 'local talents' to cook a feast for 600 underprivileged children.

His dream was to "let these children experience a sumptuous meal at a hotel, cooked by renowned chefs".

Chefs for a Cause aim to raise money to help children in Singapore - supported by the Mainly I Love Kids (MILK) fund - Vietnam and Cambodia. Already this cookbook has raised more than SGD88,000 to support education and training of underprivileged children and youths in these countries. The chefs hope it will continue to be a recipe of success to help them reach out to even more underprivileged children and youths.

This is an inspiring book, 'miraculous' (the chefs' own word) on many levels. The recipes are intricate and innovative, the photography of the highest order, and even more unbelievable is that the entire photo shoot of forty recipes was done by award-winning photographer Edmund Ho in under eight hours!

Perhaps the inspiration of the book and its vision for the children it helps is perhaps best summed up by a quote from Jimmy Chok. It appears on the same page as his recipes for carpaccio of Norwegian scallops, avruga roe, yuzo miso dressing and shiso sprouts.

"Let life take you to wherever you are meant to be."
