One of the most under-explored and least discovered corners of France, the Ardennes has a tendency to do things its own way - for instance there's the annual World Puppet Festival, held in Charleville-Méziéres each September. The history of puppetry has developed here ever since a young Jacques Felix created the first-ever puppet show to entertain the locals during the German occupation in the Second World War. Les Petits Comédiens are now taken very seriously here, however, and as well as being home to an international school of marionnettistes. Anyone thinking of planning a visit to coincide with the timing of this event, meanwhile, would be well advised to book their accommodation at arguably one of the weirdest, wackiest and most wonderful hotels in all of Europe - Hotel Le Dormeur du Val, where chair sprout feathers and the reception desk contains three pristine scooters!
Elsewhere, for visitors who are truly in search of the unusual and eccentric, the village of Cheveuges, near Sedan, is 'home' for a small Museum of Traps. Traps for mice; traps for foxes; traps for badgers. In fact, a total of 1,200 traps - generally from the Champagne-Ardenne region, but also able to boast a bear trap from Canada and a mosquito trap from Zaire. |
