Parisian graffiti

Parisian artists have made an enormous impact in the art world, but one may have slipped many people's notice.

Blek le Rat, born Xavier Prou, in 1952 was one of the first graffiti artists in Paris, and has been described as the Father of Stencil Graffiti.

Prou began his artwork in 1981, painting stencils of rats on the street walls of Paris, describing the rat as "the only free animal in the city" and one which "spreads the plague everywhere, just like street art". His name originates from the comic book Blek le Roc, using "rat" as an anagram for "art". It is stillpossible to see surviving examples of these around the city.

For a decade his identity was a mystery until he was arrested in 1991 while stencilling a replica of Caravaggio's Madonna and Child. His work is now hung in galeries around the world.

Sydney, Australia, has its own anonymous street artist who updates the figure of an elegant lady from time to time. You can find it on the corner of New South Head Road and Mona Road, Double Bay, often accompanied by painted words of wisdom.
