PHOTOGRAPHY ON THIS SITE

Gordon Hammond is an award-winning photographer whose work appears with most of Sally’s published articles as well as on their two websites. He has authored several books and has supplied images to a number of travel and tourism organisations.

Gordon’s aspirational and mouth-watering pictures bring the experience alive. His passion is authenticity and his skill is in capturing the moment. There is nothing contrived or artificial about his photography. The essential components of his images are a well-developed sense of timing and a good understanding of natural light.

When it comes to people shots, the secret lies in being able to connect with others instantly and capturing the essence of the interaction. These days the technical side of photography is largely covered by sopisticated equipment that takes care of the 'how' of capture, leaving the photographer to focus on the intuitive aspect of creative photography.

In recent years Gorodn has mastered the world of videography and these add an extra facet to his skills and this website.

Sally is also very handy with the camera. Many of the articles on this site feature her unique view of the world.

Portraits

Very English. The Mayor of Alnwick decked out in full regalia for a local event.
This old gentleman in Ping Yao, China, was dressed in the period costume of a 19th Century businessman.
This butcher in the Basque region of the South of France was justly proud of his shop and bore testimony to his product.

This is one of my favourite portaits. This fine looking Tahitian lady with a Paul Gauguin copy in the background captures so much of the beauty of the women of french Polynesia.

This young Uygar girl was helping her parents sell bread in the amazing Kashgar Sunday market.
I passed this boy in the streets of Kashgar in far western China. Like many from Central Asia he had the striking looks with green eyes and a touch of blond in his hair.
So, so English. Blue eyes, blond hair, red hood, eating an ice cream at the fair on a bleak wet day.
Anastasia was selling postcards on the parapet of thewalls of the old Estonian capital of Tallinn. People were buying cards just to get a closer look at the delightful young lady.
This gentle man from Rajasthan was playing beautiful, haunting music with a simple bamboo flute.
The attractive young woman was an interesting blend of Muslim and Hindu religions.

The Natural World

The sulphur-crested cockatoo has adapted easily to city living and can be found in large numbers in the suburbs of many Australian cities. Highly intelligent, brassy, entertaining and often destructive with their powerful beaks, they are wonderful parrots with great personalities.
The town of Ping Yao is in the heart of a coal mining region of China. Mules are still used to haul the coal in primitive carts.
Puffins are remarkable birds which are every bit at home under the water as penguins. After filling their colourful beaks with fish they will return to their burrow nests to feed their young. I was very fortunate to capture these two who landed on the cliff edge before flying off to their burrow. If they had have lingered they would have lost their catch to thousands of marauding neighbours.
We attended a goose fair in Ovingsham in England. These two rather frightened geese were the only members of their tribe present. They stayed close together for comfort and company making a rather elegant picture with the graceful necks.
Our vehicle became bogged in a blizzard while travelling in remote Tibet. While the guides were extracting it from the mire I wandered down the track to see these yaks in the snow. They made a very unusual photo.
Ths immensely powerful gorilla was enjoying basking in the sun at the Guernsey Zoo in the Channel Isles.
The robin redbreast is England's national bird. This little fellow was so small and sat so close to me in Kensington Gardens that I had to use a macro lens to focus on him.
The white lion is a distinct sub-species with few remaining in the wild in Africa. The Mogo zoo in South NSW has commenced a breeding program to increase their numbers in captivity. To capture this image of a juvenile I entered his enclosure - with caution.
Flaconry is still practiced in many parts of the world. Whether you like the idea or not, it is still a great way of getting close to these beautiful birds.
This chimp had found a home in the Mogo zoo after being abused for many years. It is an interesting portrait of a wild, very dangerous and damaged creature.
