Ten things you may not know about MELBOURNE:

  1. Vegemite, Australia’s spread of  choice, was developed here in  the 1920s and first released in 1923.
  2. Melbourne was once called Batmania, after John Batman, an early settler.
  3. Melbourne is further west than outback Bourke in NSW.
  4. The earliest European building in Australia was constructed in 1755. What? It was Cook’s Cottage which was brought to Australia and reassembled in Melbourne in 1933.
  5. Mixed bathing was banned in the 1800s, hence the colourful bathing boxes still seen on some beaches.
  6. Queen Viuctoria Markets was built over an early cemetery – there may be around 9000 bodies still underneath it!
  7. Melbourne's famous tramway system is the largest outside the European continent and the fourth largest in the world.
  8. Melbourne was the largest city in Australia at the time of Federation (1901) and the nation's interim capital and home of Federal Parliament from 1901-1927.
  9. Peter St Albans was the youngest jockey to win the Melbourne Cup – he was only 12 years, 357 days old, riding Briseis, in 1876.
  10. Neighbours, the TV series screened continuously since 1985, was filmed in Melbourne.
