The last few years have seen us bringing our pets when we go out for coffee, or even hobnobbing with cats and dogs and bunnies in specialised cafes.
Now a cafe in Japan has added some two-legged creatures to keep an eye on you while you dine. Tokyo's Akiba Fukurou Owl Cafe has a selection of owls with quaint names such as Mr Satoshi, Sweet Potato, Peanuts and Gorilla. They all seem content to sit quietly and survey this rather strange turn of events their lives have taken. After all, most cafes open during the day, which is normally nap-time for owls.
Cafe patrons must move slowly and quietly so as not to disturn the owls, and can spend some special one-on-one time with the owl they choose. Certainly being with these gentle birds is like a form of therapy, especially in a high-energy city such as this. Japanese people love pets. It is not uncommon to see a small dog dressed in doll's clothes being wheeled in pram, so cat and bunny cafes are fairly common, so perhaps there will be more owl cafes too in the future.
Akiba Fukurou Cafe (Owls Café) 67 Kanda NeribeichÅ, Chiyoda-ku, TÅkyÅ, 1500 yen per person for an hour's visit. Advance reservations essential.
