Do not pass Go ...go straight to gaol. But this is no punishment. Visitors to British Columbia come to this former gaol willingly and even stay the night. Here's how it works.
The 150-year-old former Carleton County Gaol - steeped in history and built on fun, is like no other hostel in North America. The walls are made of stone and brick, and you'll love the architecture especially while staying in some of the authentic jail cells. After all, how often can you call home and say 'Hi folks, I'm in gaol!'. And don't worry, even if you are behind bars, they'll still let you use the free WiFi.
Every day at 11am, there is a 30 minute free tour of the jail. This guided orientation tour takes you around the heritage building and provides background information on the history of the Carleton County Gaol, share stories on daily lives of inmates and explains why it is considered one of the most haunted builidings in all of Canada. If you are lucky, you might also even meet a ghost...free of charge!
The accommodation can be classy...
... or a little more spartan. The gaol is in the heart of downtown, walking distance to Parliament Hill, National Gallery of Canada, Byward Market, trendy boutiques, cosy cafes, and the Canadian Museum of Civilization. |
