Newfoundland - Canada's secret |
Explore your wild side The new Gros Morne Inn in the Atlantic province of Newfoundland and Labrador, offers luxurious accommodations in a forested hillside in Gros Morne National Park. The inn features 15 guestrooms, each overlooking ocean and mountain views, along with an outdoor spa with cedar-jetted tubs, a grand patio for dark sky viewing, and a restaurant serving seasonal and sustainable fare.
In rural Newfoundland and Labrador last October, a two-storey house bobbed along the Bay of Islands towards a new life on the opposite shoreline. The homeowners dreamed of moving from the small town of McIvers across the bay – so, they studied YouTube videos and recruited locals to help them float their home across the water, following a historically common way of resettling among coastal communities. Newfoundland and Labrador offers some of the most spectacular whale watching on Earth. Iceberg Alley, which lies along the province’s east coast, attracts a few dozen species of whales – including the world’s largest population of humpbacks (over 5,000), which can be glimpsed feeding on caplin, krill and squid. View them from the end of May to end of August. Today, visitors can view traditionally resettled communities on a guided tour with companies like Port aux Basques, Marine Excursions and Gypsy Sea Adventures.
Canada is prime whale-watching territory, with more than 30 species of whales roaming the waters along the Atlantic, Arctic and Pacific coasts. The best time to see the majestic mammals depends on the species and the destination, though whale-watching season generally runs from May to October. For even more things to see and do in Canada...
