Searching for Yeren

Love a good mystery? Fascinated by giant mythical animals? Welcome to the Yeren, China's own version of the Yeti or Bigfoot.

China may be the world’s most populous country, but truly wild China still exists. And roaming these wilds, just north of the Yangtze River, within the Shennongjia Natural Reserve – a place which has inspired myths and legends for centuries - there may still be China’s ‘Wild Man’.

The primeval forest has a thick covering of vegetation much of it completely inaccessible, and so, even with a country of 1.3 billion people, it has not yet been thoroughly explored.

Some see Yeren as China’s answer to Bigfoot, and sightings have been recorded for over 2000 years. Witnesses describe a red haired ape-man, well over six feet tall. It is thought this creature lives in the caves of the reserve's rocky landscape, and perhaps raids villages far below for dogs and chickens.

Visitors come here hoping to sight (or not to see, in the case of the timid) Yeren, but also to glimpse the bright blue-faced golden snub-nosed monkey as well as macaques, golden eagles, deer, and black bear. There is also an unusually high percentage of albino animals in  the reserve, and there are even plans to relocate panda to the region.

In July this year, for the first time Sanctuary Retreats will be running three special four-night sailings aboard the Sanctuary Yangzi Explorer, which will include a day trip to Shennongjia Natural Reserve.

Maybe, you might be the first to snap some video of Yeren!
