Zhangye's Danxia landscape looks like some crazy supernatural artist has flung paint around. Of course the reason is more, shall we say, down to earth, but they still attract tourists who can't get enough photos. Located close to the city of Zhangye, in northwestern China’s Gansu Province, these landscapes have been formed by the erosion of red sandstone, forming isolated peaks and steep stratified outcrops. They are the outcome of desert conditions, constant freezing and thawing, and wind and water erosion.
Geologists believe that Danxia topography is formed by folding of layered oceanic crust. Exposed slanting rock layers have different colors, textures, shapes, sizes, and patterns, and the combination of differences in density and erosion create towering peaks, cave holes, and stone halls. Or you can just go with the crazy-artist theory! Whichever idea you subscribe too, a visit here is a must. There are viewing platforms, sightseeing cars to cover the eight kilomtres distance between them, and plenty of walking and stair-climbing. The second and highest viewing platform is reached by 666 steps, which require about 30 minutes’ climbing but the reward is the painted panorama. Best time to visit: June to September.
