Secret Copenhagen

Any visitor to Denmark soon learns that the Danes are very aware of size. Compliment them on their command of English (uniformly excellent) and they will shrug and say 'but Denmark is such a small country, why would anyone learn Danish?'.

So, you might ask, why would anyone write a book about Copenhagen's secrets? Surely the capital of such a small country could not be concealing enough surprises to fill a book?

The authors of Secret Copenhagen (the most recent in a long line of JonGlez's 'Secret' range which explores little-known aspects of major cities worldwide) certainly thought so and have unearthed some amazing little-known facts and features of the city. There are over a hundred entries, complete with photographs, in the volume which is slim enough to slip into a corner of your suitcase or rucksack.

For ease when walking or travelling around, the city has been divided into four main sections, with a couple more for outer areas. There is a regional index at the front and an alphabetical one at the end of the book.

Without spoiling the book too much for you, I can tell you that you can learn about a riding school in a former airship hangar, an elevator that never stops, an ancient hidden maze-like mulberry tree, architect-designed telephone kiosks, and the toy museum you need to book to visit. Much more, of course, including frescoes, a ghoulish reminder of the death sentence, hidden gardens and an evening walk with bats.

If you are not in, or planning to go to Copenhagen, check the website for other cities you know which may already have been covered – or should that be UNcovered?

You won't be disappointed.

Secret Copenhagen, by Johanne Steenstrup and Klaus Dahl, published by JonGlez, 2014, paperback, rrp US$23.95. ISBN 978 236195 0835
