Tbilisi's churches |
Saint George is the patron saint of Georgia, as the country's name suggests. His image - along with that of the dragon he is supposed to have slain in order to save the king's daughter's life - pops up everywhere.
Worth seeing is the Georgian Orthodox Kashveti Church of St George, built in the early 20th century, and adjacent to April 9 Park, facing Rustaveli Avenue.
The Holy Trinity Cathedral dominates the skyline on its hill across the river from the Peace Bridge. Those who can't face the uphill trek can always place their donations in this thoughtfully positioned box on a bridge upriver.
However, it is well worth visiting this controversial edifice, consecrated on St George's Day 2004. It is said to be able to accommodate 10,000 people.
While the exterior is imposing but quite plain, the interior has been be lavishly decorated with icons...
