Australia is a country noted for its size, moderate climate in most populated areas and beautiful beaches and landscape. It is a highly developed country attracting around six million tourists annually. LOCATION: Australia is an island continent, sometimes regarded as part of Oceania. The largest country in Oceania and the largest borderless country in the world, as well as the largest country wholly in the Southern Hemisphere. It is also the only country that is also a continent. BORDERED BY: The Pacific Ocean, Tasman Sea, Southern Ocean, Indian Ocean and the Timor, Arafura and Coral Seas. CAPITAL: Canberra (pop. approx. 360,000) LARGEST CITY: Sydney, pop. 4.5 million POPULATION of COUNTRY: 22.8 million (50th in the world) POPULATION DENSITY: 2.8 per square kilometre (233rd in the world) AREA: 7,617,930 square kilometres (6th largest country - ranked between Brazil and India, which is less than half Australia's size) FEDERATION: January 1st, 1901. AUSTRALIA DAY: January 26, commemorating the establishment of a white European (British) colony in 1788.
