Visit the Aeolian Islands	Lipari, the major island in the beautiful group of Aeolian Islands to the north of Sicily. Stromboli is another island further north in the group with an active volcano which can be seen from the Italian mainland. All islands are accessible by ferry from either Milazzo or Messina on Sicily. On the menu: beautiful fresh seafood, local olive oil and capers (caperi). Also read: Finding Nino, Marc Llewellyn
Able was I ere I saw Elba	Elba, off the coast of Tuscany is the tiny island where Napoleon was exiled. Now popular with tourists it is accessible by air from Pisa and Milan, or an hour's ferry ride from Piombino. On the menu: Tuscan soups, seafood.
Meet the next-door neighbour	Slovenia - OK, it-s another country, but it adjoins It-s easy to drive from Trieste or you may arrive by air. On the menu: cured meats, sausages and smallgoods.
Sample Sardinia	Sardinia - Fly to the island or come by ferry from several Italian ports. Popular with tourists, especially in the eastern side, but much of it is unspoiled. On the menu: seafood, carta musica, fregola a tiny pasta, culingiones, a sort of potato ravioli, and dishes using locally-grown saffron.
